Hwang Sun-woo
SEOUL – South Korean swimming star Hwang Sun-woo has officially broken one of Asia’s most formidable records, clocking a stunning 1:43.92 in the men’s 200m freestyle at the National Sports Festival in Busan on Monday.
The 22-year-old’s time eclipsed the previous Asian record of 1:44.39, held by China’s Olympic champion Sun Yang since 2017. More significantly, it propelled Hwang into rarefied air as the seventh-fastest swimmer in history for the event.

“This is one of the happiest moments of my life,” Hwang told the Korea Herald. “Throughout my swimming career, I have strived to break the 1:44 barrier. I finally achieved it.”
The record confirms Hwang’s status as the world’s top 200m freestyle swimmer this season and marks a major milestone on his path to the Paris Olympics.
